La Galerie Nathalie Obadia est heureuse de présenter la cinquième exposition de l'artiste belge Sophie Kuijken, après sa dernière en 2020 à Bruxelles. Maintenue à l'abri des regards pendant près de 20 ans et dévoilée pour la première fois en 2011 au Musée Dhondt-Dhaenens, sur les encouragements de son directeur Joost Declerq, l'œuvre picturale de Sophie Kuijken constitue un apport d'une grande singularité à l'art du portrait. Héritière de la peinture flamande, l'œuvre de Sophie Kuijken perturbe de l'intérieur les codes traditionnels du genre par une approche contemporaine qui trouble en profondeur. Dans un entre-deux-mondes atypique, ses portraits font advenir une présence paradoxale, à la fois silencieuse et scrutante, humaine et spectrale, brouillant les contours de notre humanité. L'exposition présente dix nouvelles œuvres sur panneau de bois et, pour la première fois, sur toile, suscitant plus que jamais ce sentiment « d'inquiétante étrangeté » dont Sophie Kuijken a le secret.

Galerie Nathalie Obadia is pleased to present Belgian artist Sophie Kuijken's fifth exhibition, following her 2020 show in Brussels. Shielded from the limelight for nearly 20 years, then unveiled for the first time in 2011 at the Dhondt-Dhaenens Museum, under the encouragement of its director Joost Declerq, Sophie Kuijken's pictorial oeuvre is a highly singular addition to the art of portraiture. Following in the footsteps of Flemish painting, Sophie Kuijken's work disrupts the genre's traditional codes from the inside, by adopting a deeply troubling contemporary approach. In an atypical space between two worlds, her portraits are imbued with a paradoxical presence, at once silent and scrutinizing, human and spectral, blurring the contours of humanity. The exhibition presents ten new paintings on wood panel and, for the first time, on canvas, which, more than ever, arouses in the viewer that sense of "disquieting weirdness" to which Sophie Kuijken possesses the secret.
