Contemporary art, as it has emerged since the end of the 1960s, is inextricably linked to the logic of globalisation and soft power, which unite a host of players and major figures in the service of creation and its diffusion.
First and foremost, the artists, with figures such as Gerhard Richter, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst and Yayoi Kusama, but also the curators, of whom Harald Szeemann is a precursor and Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi an embodiment of the sensibilities of the Global South, and the gallerists, with Larry Gagosian and Marian Goodman, art fairs, including the emblematic Art Basel incarnated by Marc Spiegler, collectors such as François Pinault and Uli Sigg, not forgetting those who have worked to bring contemporary art into the museum world, such as Suzanne Pagé and Renzo Piano, who has created its most luminous settings.
Drawing on her dual expertise as a gallery owner and teacher, Nathalie Obadia introduces us to the major figures in contemporary art, enabling us to grasp their close interweaving and interdependence.
