Agnès Varda's first retrospective exhibition catalogue
From its links with history of art to its social and political dimensions, Viva Varda! explores the major themes in the polymorphous work of Agnès Varda (1928-2019). Over a period of seventy years, the photographer, filmmaker and artist has developed a personal body of work that is fundamentally rooted in time. Her filmography includes more than forty short and feature-length films ranging from fiction to documentary, including the essential Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962), Sans toit ni loi (1985), Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000) and Visages Villages (2017). A precursor of the Nouvelle Vague, she is one of the few women of her generation to have made a career as a director. A globetrotter and an artist of conviction, Varda also shows great concern for the world and social upheaval. Her work, permeated by themes of feminism and marginality, remains highly topical.

This book, under the direction of Florence Tissot, accompanies Agnès Varda's first retrospective exhibition, organised by the Cinémathèque française. It brings together texts by French and Anglo-Saxon specialists, as well as a filmography with commentary by numerous personalities. With a preface by Costa-Gavras, it is illustrated with over 300 documents (archives, film images, works of art, photographs, etc.), many of them previously unpublished, drawn largely from Agnès Varda's personal archives held by Ciné-Tamaris, the family company she founded and managed by Rosalie Varda and Mathieu Demy.
