As long as his work has been taking shape, Sarkis has been photographing it, in his workshops and exhibitions. This uninterrupted practice makes up a vast visual archive whose uniqueness lies in the plurality of its destinations, combining a documentary function with a specifically artistic dimension.

The aim of this book is to explore the artist's production through the photographer's images, unfolding in a succession of sequences some of the major questions that this work reformulates over more than fifty years of creation.

The thread of the exhibitions unfolds through associations and invitations such as the artist has never ceased to generate in his work: time crosses and forks from workshops to installations, places call out to others, and the exhibitions appear in a new light in the neighbourhoods woven by this photographic polyphony.

Sarkis is an artist of Armenian origin, born in Istanbul in 1938 and living in France since 1964. He is represented by Galerie Nathalie Obadia.

Anne Marquez is an art historian. She has already published Sarkis, ailleurs ici (Skira Flammarion, 2012).
